It isn't therapy, medical care, or a crisis service, and it's not a substitute for professional advice. For any decision about your health or wellbeing, please talk to a qualified professional.

Finding ongoing professional support

For regular, ongoing support, a trained professional can offer what a journal cannot. If you are looking for a therapist, counsellor, or other qualified help, a few places to start:

  • Your doctor or local health service. They can talk through what you are going through and refer you to ongoing care. Depending on where you live, this may be covered by public health services or your insurance.
  • Your health insurer. Most can point you to therapists and counsellors near you who are covered by your plan.
  • A registered therapist or counsellor. Many countries have a national register or professional association whose directory lists qualified practitioners you can contact directly.
  • Your workplace or school. Many employers offer free, confidential counselling through an assistance programme, and most colleges and universities have a counselling service.
  • Support lines. You can search free, confidential support lines for your country at findahelpline.com, including some that offer ongoing emotional support, not only crisis help.
